Custom Military Challenge Coin Bottle Openers for Marine Helicopter Squadron One

Most of us are familiar with the term “Air Force One” being used to identify the aircraft that the President of the United States boards for his travels.  Though Air Force One is the most publicized form of the President’s transportation, the truth is that when the U.S. President boards any aircraft, the craft assumes a new call sign based on what branch of the military it belongs to.

More Than One Means of Travel

For instance, if the President boards a Coast Guard plane, that plane becomes Coast Guard One. If it’s an Army craft, its new call sign becomes Army One or Navy One in regards to a Navy plane.  However, in the case of the U.S. Marines, Marine One refers to a helicopter.  All About Coins had the honor of making a custom challenge coin for the unit who operates and maintains the President’s Marine’s helicopter fleet.

A Multifaceted Challenge Coin Design

The Marine One challenge coin possesses several authentic and remarkable design features. The image displayed here makes it easy to see the various elements of the military coin.

We placed the presidential seal on one side against a rich blue and silver stars outlined background.  The words “Presidential Helicopter Squadron, HMX-1” can be read along the circular edge of the coin.

On the reverse side, you see a 3D sculpted design, replicating the actual helicopter.  The 3D image, one of our many add-on options, is back dropped by a bold military green color also traced in silver stars.

A Practical and Innovative Keepsake

However, the most outstanding aspect of this custom marine challenge coin is the bottle opener feature.  Custom challenge coin bottle openers combine the look and appeal of traditional challenge coins with the concept of usefulness.  As a result they have become increasingly popular within the Armed Forces as well as civilian groups.

Custom Challenge Coins Are Not Just For the Military

Challenge coins may have started in the armed forces as a highly regarded tradition, but more and more they are being used by civilians. Everyday people, like you and all of us here at All About Coins have the potential to go above and beyond our call of duty.

Everyday Heroes, Spirited Troops and Good Samaritans

When used as award coins, custom challenge coins are a great way to be acknowledged as well as praise others for their contribution. We recently learned about and want to share with you the following three cases in which civilians were awarded with challenge coins.

Bryant Brown, a manager of one of The Money Store locations in Mobile, Alabama, was awarded with a commemorative challenge coin by TSA officials.  Brown is responsible for the recovery of Jolie, a 3 year-old, 65 pound, bomb-sniffing German shepherd that went missing two weeks ago.

When the Boy Scouts of Troop 9 in Weymouth, Massachusetts arrived for their first meeting of the New Year, they were pleasantly surprised by two Home Land Security K-9 Unit officers. Not only did the troops learn the details of the officers’ work and get to meet their K-9 partners, but also received commemorative challenge coins with the Federal Protection Service & Homeland Security seals on them.

Pedro Bello-Alarcon from the Town of Madison, Wisconsin found $6,000 in envelope behind a dumpster. The All Metal Recycling did the right thing and turned the money into the police and even ran newspaper ads to help locate the money’s proper owner.  When no one claimed the money after 60 days it was returned to Bello-Alarcon and he too was awarded with a challenge coin for his honesty.

Price is Right Challenge Coins Welcome Drew Carey as a Host

Popular TV game show, the Price Is Right, commemorated its new host, Drew Carey, with custom challenge coins.  The unique gift items featured a 3D sculpted depiction of the actor on one side and a very famous catch phrase and the show’s logo on the other. CBS, the show’s studio gave one to each crew member as a way of thanking them for being a part of the change.

Challenge coins are great for birthdays, anniversaries, retirement parties,
and promotions for this reason. They are the type of souvenir that lasts for
years and years. The small but impressive gifts have a higher perceived
value than other types of awards.  That is why so many companies opt to give
them to employees.

Ways Customers Make Their Challenge Coins Unique

There are a number of features that can be used on commemorative challenge
coins.  One of the most notable is the item’s shape.  Traditionally,
challenge coins are round.  These days, more and more customers are leaning
towards unique shapes like squares, rectangles, and triangles.  The more
unusual the challenge coin, the more interesting it becomes.

Other add-ons like glitter, glow-in-the-dark enamel, decorative edges, and
sequential numbering can significantly alter the appearance of a challenge
coin and make it more collectible.  In fact, companies can choose a variety
of these options as a way of setting themselves apart from the competition.
People will begin to associate the challenge coin with a particular moment
in their lives.

Those crew members working on the Price Is Right will remember a moment in
history where Drew Carey replaced long-term host Bob Barker.  All they have
to do is look down at their challenge coin to remember their role on the
show.
