Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day, commemorates U.S. Service Members who died while in serving the military.  According to David W. Blight, author of Race and Reunion: The Civil War in American Memory, the United Stated Federal holiday was “First enacted by formerly enslaved African-Americans to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War, it was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars.”

Today, Memorial Day is an occasion for more general expressions of memory.  People from all around the country gather together to visit the graves of their deceased relatives.   It also became a long weekend where people could spend time at the beach, shop, partake in family get-togethers, and watch the fireworks demonstrations being put on by their towns and cities.

What Does the Memorial Day Foundation Do At Gravesites?

The Memorial Day Foundation raises money so it can honor fallen soldiers in the Washington, D.C. area.  One of the ways that they do this is by selling custom lapel pins and patches at the gravesites of fallen soldiers.  These items are a few of the products available for purchase onsite.  The proceeds from the pins and patches are used to purchase wreaths to put on the tombstones of the fallen.

All About Pins felt honored to be able to assist The Memorial Day Foundation with this project.   We were able to design striking artwork that complemented the customer’s bold message of “Memorial Day Freedom Is Not Free”.  The lapel pins and custom patches that we created grab people’s attention and make them truly think about the significance of the holiday.  Without the brave efforts of past and present military men and women, we would not be able to enjoy all of the benefits that we do in this country.

Here are some of the locations in the nation’s capital where you can find The Memorial Day Foundation memorabilia:

  • DC World War I Memorial
  • National World War II Memorial
  • U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial
  • Korean War Veterans Memorial
  • Vietnam Veterans Memorial
  • Vietnam Women’s Memorial
  • Three Servicemen Statue (Vietnam Veterans Memorial)
  • The Second Division Memorial
  • First Infantry Division Monument
  • U.S. Navy Memorial

Custom Lapel Pins and Patches Make Perfect Fundraising Items

Custom lapel pins and patches are perfect fundraising items.  Not only are they made from quality materials and crafted with care, they can be created in a way that is personal and memorable.  For The Memorial Day Foundation, this was especially important for two reasons.  One, the pins and patches gave donors a thank you gift that they could use for years and year.  Second, they generated interest in the project which enabled the foundation to be able to purchase more wreaths for gravesites.
